In fact, a new survey of more than 1,000 employers by ManpowerGroup Canada found that 59 per cent reported having some difficulty filling jobs due to a lack of skilled talent. These shortages can be addressed by hiring and training employees or educating and moving employees into roles that require more advanced skillsets.
  • Continuing growth – Offering employees ways to continue their education will allow them to pivot professional paths and find what they are truly passionate about while still advancing their careers within one company.

How to Make Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives Impactful

In recent years, it has been repeatedly proven how impactful diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts can be in the workplace. DEI initiatives can help play a role in building a robust, inclusive workforce where employees feel welcomed, engaged and supported to do their best work.

Consider the following tips to create impactful DEI initiatives:

  • Connect DEI training to the overall strategy. Many organizations offer diversity training but don’t follow through by implementing efforts into their overall company strategy. A team needs action items, goals and check-ins to track progress on DEI initiatives. Employers should also connect these endeavours with metrics, such as employee retention.
  • Promote pay equity. Managers should be analyzing which employees are underpaid compared to those with similar roles and responsibilities. This will help determine any patterns that may exist where certain groups of people are being undervalued. Any observed pay gaps should be fixed and monitored to make sure the issue doesn’t continue.
  • Encourage ongoing conversations. Organizations should encourage employees to share feedback on the subject all year long, not just during training sessions. Deploy periodic surveys and create paths of communication that can be used to submit any issues that may arise.
  • Put together diverse groups of employees. When creating teams for initiatives, whether it’s a client project or company event, make sure employees of diverse backgrounds are included. A diverse cross-section of talent allows for different perspectives that will help promote stronger, more creative and more inclusive ideas.
